Chef's Notes

*Chinese yellow rock sugar/candy is more mild and less sweet than regular white or brown sugar. Ideally measured in oz or grams instead of tablespoons due to its irregular shape.

You probably going to kill me for this, but my hubby’s family being from Vietnam also has a similar dessert (taro, sago, coconut milk, rock sugar) because probably they got it from Cantonese ppl who migrated there long ago, but they also add sliced bananas and serve it cold. But I must say it is so much more yummy with the addition of bananas.

Delicious! Quadrupled the recipe for a potluck and everyone had great things to say about it after explaining what it was. My local Asian market only had the small taro so I had to use that and the taro flavor in general was a little lacking. I also thought there was no way that was enough sago pearls, but after letting it sit in the fridge overnight, it looked good when I mixed it up. Definitely looking forward to making it again! Also, since this is my first comment on the site, love the name! I may have chosen this recipe over others just because the name, Smelly Lunchbox.

literally my go-to recipe for taro sago! I get compliments from everyone that I've made this for, including my mother in law ... it's the perfect "not too sweet" dessert !
