Chef's Notes

Ham Bone Substitutes

Smoked ham shanks or ham hocks are a great alternative and also add tremendous flavor. (A shank is meatier and more preferable for this recipe.)
Salted pork and/or a few strips of uncooked smoked bacon can also be substituted. (But try for a shank or hock first.) Bacon also makes a nice optional garnish on top of this soup prior to serving.
If you're unable to use a ham bone or any of the substitutes: Use 8 cups of chicken broth instead of using 4 cups of broth & 4 cups of water.

To use Canned Beans: My Ham Soup, White Bean Soup, Sausage and White Bean Soup, and Pinto Bean Soup recipes are great alternatives if using canned beans!
If you enjoy this recipe, then you have to try my split pea soup recipe. (It's also Stove Top, Slow Cooker, and Instant Pot friendly!)

I had a small ham shank in the freezer, at the time I bought it I didn't know why. A few days ago I had a taste for ham and bean soup but didn't have any ham on hand. I saw the substitutes in your blog and ham shank was one of them. Thawed the ham shank out, cooked my dry navy beans and made this soup. It is so delicious! Both, my husband and I really loved it! I went back to the store and bought 2 more smoked ham shanks and put them in the freezer because there will be more soup to be made again! Thank you for an easy and tasty recipe!

OMG yummy!
Hubs and I both grew up eating different versions of ham and beans with cornbread. This recipe hits it out of the park! Only changes were I used the frozen onion, carrot ,and celery mix (hubs hates the smell of raw onions so I can sneak them into stuff this way) in addition to the 2c carrots, and added black pepper. I made it on the stove top, cooked for 3.5 hours and it was nice and thick.
Saving this one for sure!

I love this recipe and have made it several times. I snatched the ham bone from my brother’s Thanksgiving dinner so I could make a batch of this fit the freezer! It is soooooo good!

I made your recipe a few months ago using a ham bone and it turned out great.  Just made it again in the crock pot, this time using ham hocks, extra diced ham, two large cans of Great Northern beans and chicken stock.  I used an immersion blender near the end of cooking and pulsed it for a little while, just enough to leave some whole beans.  It turned out perfect! Thanks!
