How Do You Paint With Buttercream?
Using a pallet knife to apply buttercream and create an image with depth and character is actually pretty easy.
Chill the cake first. It's much easier to work on a stable surface.
Draw a quick sketch of your tree using a toothpick or skewer to serve as a guide.
Practice on a plate first so you can get used to how much buttercream to add you your knife and how to swipe it on to simulate the look of pine tree branches.
If you mess up it's pretty easy to remove mistakes with a small knife and start over.
remember to apply the buttercream with the tip of your knife then swipe up to create that depth. there's a flick of the wrist involved.

John, I had you pegged from the very first video I saw of you. You are amazing!!!
Thank you so much for the recipe, I'll try to make it this Christmas
in the ingredients section for the buttercream it says
1 tsp cardamom
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp all-spice
1/4 tsp ground cloves
but in the instructions part it says nothing about adding these but then says add the salt and vanilla if using.
My question is should I add all the above spices? Seems like it will turn the icing a brownish color and also if I should add vanilla and salt which I would like to, how much of each? Thanks!
John,
Oh. My. Gosh!!! This cake was absolutely delicious! It tasted exactly like Christmas and was a great thing to make for my family. They all loved it as well! However, I was wondering if I made these into cupcakes how long would the baking time be?
Looks lovely! You’ve inspired me to get back to baking. Have you tried this technique with Swiss Meringue Buttercream? How did the results compare?
