Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 200°C (400F).

  2. Cut the puff pastry sheet into 3 equal horizontal slices (refer to photo above).

  3. Mix together the sausage meat and apple sauce and equally distribute it into the middle of each puff pastry slice.

  4. Brush the egg wash along the bottom of each piece of puff pastry with a pastry brush, then fold the top edge of the pastry over to meet the bottom, encasing the sausage meat inside.

  5. Use a fork to seal the edges together then cut each long sausage roll into 8 smaller ones, so you end up with 24 mini sausage rolls in total.

Chef's Notes

Expert Tips:

Preheat your air fryer before baking the sausage rolls. This will help the pastry become crisp and flakey.
Allow the puff pastry to rest at room temperature for 20 minutes before using it. If it's too cold, it will break easily when unrolled.
Thoroughly brush each sausage roll in egg wash so they have an even golden colour when baked.
Make sure the sausage rolls are in a single layer in your air fryer. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to air fry them in 2 batches.

Variations:

Replace the apple sauce with caramelised onion chutney for a richer flavour.
Add a small handful of grated cheese (cheddar is best, but hard mozzarella would also work) to make sausage and cheese rolls.
Stir 1 teaspoon of wholegrain mustard or dijon mustard into the sausage meat for added flavour.
Add a sprinkling of poppy seeds to the top of each sausage roll, after they have been glazed with egg wash.

Storage:
Store - The cooked sausage rolls can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Reheat - The mini sausage rolls can be served cold, at room temperature, or hot. Reheat in the air fryer or oven for a few minutes.
Freeze - The sausage rolls can be frozen unbaked or baked for up to 3 months. If freezing unbaked there is no need to defrost them before air frying. Just pop them straight into the air fryer and add a few minutes to the cooking time.

I had two sausages left over from sausage and mash so used these to make sausage rolls but I then had some puff pastry left over so made a filling out of raw potato and cheese, egg washed them and put them in my Salter 2.5 ltr (going to get a bigger one)I have had this one for 3 years but because of helpful people like you Beth I am using it a lot more now,and honestly there is nothing you cannot cook in them.Last night I put in two chicken portions with an Aunt Bessies Jacket spud ,dinner is served ,temp. probe of chicken was 8o'c.Also bought a slow cooker and had beef stew with dumplings tonight, cooking is fun finding out new things.
