Unfortunately, the popular A&W Whistle Dog was discontinued in 2017 here in Canada. Fortunately, however, you can recreate it at home and relive all those wonderful memories! The A&W Whistle Dog is relatively easy to make and it is worth it, trust me.

Ingredients

1/2 cup cheddar cheese (grated)
8 Hot dogs (all-beef, sliced down the middle but not all the way through)
8 Hot dog buns (toasted)
8 Slices bacon (cooked crisp)
8 Tbsp sweet green relish
8 Tbsp white onion (finely chopped (optional))

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Line a cookie sheet with foil and lay out your bacon on the foil.
Bake the bacon in the oven for 12 minutes, turn and continue to cook for another 5-8 minutes. Careful, it will turn from cooked to overdone very quickly. Remove and set aside.
While the bacon is cooking heat your grill to medium-hot and grill the hot dogs on both sides until nice grill marks appear.
Toast the buns on the grill, open side down.
Place one hot dog in each bun and fill the hot dog with cheese.
