BBQ Tempeh
This vegan BBQ tempeh is the BEST way to enjoy tempeh. The tempeh gets pan-fried until golden and crispy and then coated in a sweet but tangy and smoky BBQ sauce. And takes just 20 minutes!

Instructions
Slice the tempeh crosswise into ½-inch thick strips. Then, place each strip on its side and slice in half lengthwise to make it thinner.See the step-by-step photos in the blog for reference.
Optional - steam the tempeh. Place the tempeh pieces in a steamer basket fitted in a saucepan with a few inches of water. Bring the water to a boil, cover, and steam the tempeh for 10 minutes. Note: I typically steam tempeh to get rid of its characteristic bitter taste, but I find it unnecessary in this recipe, as the BBQ sauce is so bold in flavor.
Line a cutting board or plate with a few paper towels.

Notes*See the “ingredients and substitutions” section in the blog post for vegan-friendly Worcestershire sauce brands. Or, try my homemade blend (included in the blog post).
** If you don’t have liquid smoke, add more smoked paprika. Start with an additional 1/2 teaspoon and use up to 1 1/2 teaspoons.
*** If you are making the BBQ Tempeh recipe, you do not need to simmer the sauce for this long. Just 1-2 minutes is fine.

this is delicious!!! the BBQ sauce was amazing and my first success with tempeh! we had big bowls with quinoa, avocado, tomatoes, and brussels. loved it.
My fav tempeh recipe thus far. Thanks for being here Nisha!
This was delicious! I ate this with quinoa, broccoli, and cubed sweet potatoes sprinkled with cinnamon spice.
Wow, this recipe is a winner! You definitely unlocked the code to a fantastic BBQ sauce. I followed your recipe as written, omitting cayenne and adding a smidge more molasses because I was at the bottom of the jar and why not just finish it off. My husband and dinner guests couldn't get enough of it. I served it with your herbed potato salad, which was also perfect. Thank you for these wonderful vegan dishes!
The BBQ sauce is the BOMB! I haven’t tasted bbq sauce this good ever - and I’ve tried a lot. It might have been created to pair with tempeh, but I can imagine it with other foods too. Thank you for another amazing sauce!
Excellent recipe! Thanks for sharing! My husband loves tempeh! He could have eaten the whole pan! The bowl allows for a ton of creative variety. That bbq sauce is the bomb!!!
I highly recommend putting this on a toasted bun with some vegan ranch and pickles. Summertime has arrived!
