O. M. G. !! Our new fave belgian waffle recipe!! Absolutely LOVE this recipe!! Oh so yummy and quite a hit! I had vanilla hazelnut coffee and used it in the recipe. OUTSTANDING!! Served these with sliced strawberries, blueberries, powdered sugar, whipped cream and real Canadian maple syrup!
In the past few months, I’ve tried lots and lots of different waffle recipes: regular, chocolate chip, peanut butter, cheddar and chive… This is by far the best recipe I’ve found!
- The ingredients are perfectly balanced. No soggy dense waffles, no overly sweet nor bland waffles. I ate mine like a cookie hot off the iron with no other toppings and it was perfect!!!
- Whipping the egg whites is the crucial step that gives every waffle that perfect “outer edge of the brownie pan” crispness while keeping the inside moist and soft like perfect chocolate cake. This is a step I’m going to add to every waffle batter from now on.
- The coffee really brings out the chocolatey flavor!
- I didn’t use non-stick spray or extra butter/oil on the iron but they still popped right out.
This is a great recipe. I will make this again for sure.
I used mostly buttermilk instead of whole milk. My kids and nieces ate them up with whipped cream, strawberries, sprinkles, and maple/chocolate syrup! Thank you for the great recipe!
For a healthier version, instead of the granulated sugar I used equal parts of maple syrup/honey (1/3 cup total). Instead of the vegetable oil, I also subbed 1/4 cup melted coconut oil and 1/4 cup melted butter. I have an espresso machine and I pulled 4 shots to use instead of the brewed coffee, and I just added some extra milk to help the batter’s consistency.
I wasn’t sure how it would come out with these changes, but can I just say that it was amazing!! I’m sure it’s even more delicious as the original recipe, but if you are looking for a bit healthier version just make these swaps and it’s just as amazing. Even my 12 year old sugar obsessed kid loved it and couldn’t even tell that I had tweaked the recipe a bit.
An absolute favorite in our house! We top them with nutella, whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
Made these and froze them to be served later to a family reunion group. Plan to serve a quarter of a waffle with a scoop of butter pecan ice cream, homemade hot fudge sauce, and a sprinkling of chopped pecans. I predict total delight.
Made these this morning, because I don't have chocolate for the holiday! I saw one review say that the flavor wasn't strong enough, so I did add more cocoa. I increased it by one quarter cup, and reduce the flour by 1/4 cup. They came out delicious. I also did not know that coffee can expire... So the coffee I had on hand was no good. Good. I had to use half a cup of hot cocoa instead with a caffeine shot in it. The recipe made six full-size Belgian waffles for me. Once I got started, it rolled a long smoothly. Folding in the egg whites I believe, helped a lot. These are delicious, and I will be sharing them with my boyfriend who loves chocolate! They taste great with honey, I need to make some fresh whipped cream to try that as well.
Wow my family loved these!! I left out the cinnamon because I wasn’t feeling it, but did everything else as written including the coffee! We topped with whipped cream and raspberries. My entire family LOVED these! Thanks for the awesome recipe!
Holy moly, these were incredible. I used all milk and no coffee for the first run. I'm a chocolate and a coffee lover, so I will definitely have some cold coffee on hand the next time I make these. Thanks so much for sharing.
My family is addicted to these waffles! We've made them several times over the last year and I thought it was time for me to come say THANK YOU for putting this on the Internet for us to find! =D
I'm a professional chef and this recipe ROCKS!!
true success first time. VERY HAPPY
i did eventually tweak a few little things, but still still to the main amounts
GREAT recipe
Thank you
Chef Martin
These are really good! Somehow they weren't crispy on the outside though. However, I used a regular waffle iron instead of a Belgian. Is that probably the reason or do you think it's for another reason?
Made these with my sister and they were great! They were fluffy and cooked well. We opted out of the coffee and cinnamon, I'm kind of new to baking and don't feel quite that adventurous yet but they weren't lacking without it. We had them with homemade vanilla ice cream my sister made. Would for sure recommend!
